The Maritime Pro Kart Series kicked off it’s races Sunday at the East Coast Karting track in Dieppe, NB.
About 40 drivers were on hand from all over the Atlantic Provinces to compete on a hot and sunny day. The series featured
4 divisions: Novice (8-12), Junior (12-15), Senior Light (15+) and Senior Heavy (15+).
The Novice kids kicked off the day, as local boy Julien LeBlanc in the #7 kart finished qualifying with pole position,
after a fantastic lap of 30.074 seconds. A.J. Nason’s #44 started in second, with a time less than a third of a second
behind. The Feature race saw the two pull away from the field slowly with LeBlanc leading Nason the entire way. #00 Denver
Foran, last year’s winner, completed the podium in 3rd.
Junior was all Nathan Kelly. He took pole with a 26.478 second lap, almost a half second ahead of the rest of the field.
Despite the fact that the lead of the Feature was solidly in the hands of Kelly, it was an all-out battle for second between
PEI’s Brodie MacQuarrie and Dieppe’s Benoit LeBlanc. As Kelly pulled away in a truly brilliant drive, LeBlanc
and MacQuarrie showed they had what it takes, with a hair-raising second-placed fight for the entire 20 laps. LeBlanc would
eventually take second, with MacQuarrie third.
Senior Light was a case of three young guns taking on the seasoned veteran. 13-year Karting veteran Rob MacLeod
took pole with a laptime of 26.307, but within 0.2 seconds there were three Junior graduates; Aaron Kennedy, Gerald Caseley
and Jonathan Stewart. MacLeod kept his lead early, but soon all three were breathing down his neck. In the end, “Rapid
Rob” was just too much and no one got past him. He won with Kennedy second, Stewart third and Caseley fourth. At the
line, all 4 drivers finished within the same three-quarters of a second.
Senior Heavy was a thriller. Rejean LeBlanc took his first ever pole, beating Barry Nickerson into second with
a 27.256 second lap. LeBlanc dropped to third in the Pre-Final, as Nickerson and “Zero Hero” Rob Poirier in his
trademark #0 kart got by him. Early in the Final, Poirier was out with engine troubles and so it was up to Nickerson, LeBlanc
and Poncie Rose to battle for the lead. They were nose-to-tail for 15 laps, but with 9 laps to go LeBlanc’s clutch let
go and he dropped out of the race. Barry Nickerson would go on to win, with Rose in second and Ryan Dobbelsteyn picking up
third. Nickerson’s kart was deemed illegal in the Technical Check after the race, and so Poncie Rose was given the win.
The series now shifts to the New Brunswick International Speedway near Fredericton on July 30th. The series will then
go to Halifax and PEI later this summer.
